It is now official, Nicolas Ghesquières is the new artistic director of Louis Vuitton. Not a big surprise though since his name has been ushered all over the net and in every magazines and fashion houses hallways since Marc Jacobs’s farewell after his last and memorable show for Louis Vuitton SS14.
Personally, I am thrilled with the choice, being an admirer of the french designer who revived the house of Balenciaga from 1997 to 2012. Following Cristobal Balenciaga’s footsteps, the creator of the iconic egg coat and architectural tailoring is not an easy job but Ghesquières mastered the feminine yet futuristic look.
His vision of the modern Balenciaga woman, with sharp tailoring, sophisticated yet simple silhouettes and rich fabrics conquered fashion icons like Charlotte Gainsbourg, turning the label into the staple for parisian chic. Their friendship led to many red carpet staples and the creation of a subtile perfume perfume, the eponym Balenciaga.
Let’s not forget that Nicolas Ghesquières also fathom the cult city bag which was an immense commercial success.
It was really unconceivable that this vionary and extremely designer who had been knighted in 2007 “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” had left Balenciaga and the Kering in November 2012 after 15 years of collaboration and that his talent wasn’t required at another fashion house. Brilliant and very smart move from Louis Vuitton.
Interviewed today by Vogue France, Nicolas Ghesquières declared that “Louis Vuitton has always embodied fom him the ultimate symbol of luxury, innovation and exploration. I am deeply honored by the mission I have been entrusted with and proud to be part of the history of this great house whose vision and staples I do share. I cannot wait to meet the teams. Together we will build the future of the brand while preserving its prestigious heritage”.
And we, fashionistas, cannot wait to discover his first FW 2014-15 collection during Paris Fashion week in march 2014 .
